Hsinyi Liu
Hsinyi Liu was born in Taiwan and currently lives and works in New York. Before committing to her artistic practice full-time, she worked in journalism and web design. These earlier experiences ultimately led her back to a path she had long felt drawn to, an artistic practice centered on creating, observing, and reflecting on human experience.
Working primarily with ceramics and oil paint, her practice gradually constructs a distinctive visual universe inhabited by ambiguous figures with animal-like qualities and subtly fragmented human forms. These characters often appear gentle, slightly naïve, or delicately unbalanced, existing within emotionally layered spaces where warmth, curiosity, and a quiet sense of unease coexist. Rather than presenting a clear narrative, the works evoke fleeting emotional states and invite viewers into a realm where imagination and everyday experience intersect.
Early works explored the dual nature of humanity and reflected on how innocence and unease can exist simultaneously. Through the arrangement of characters and scenes, they examined tensions between softness and sharpness, warmth and shadow. As the practice evolved, particularly after she became a mother, the process gradually shifted toward a more intuitive and open approach, allowing forms, colors, and characters to emerge organically through play and instinct. She often describes raising a child as a “second childhood,” a perspective that reshaped her understanding of care, exploration, and emotional connection. Subtle observations and emotional experiences from daily life have since entered the work, bringing nuanced reflections on curiosity, affection, and emotional depth.
In recent years, the world within the work has come to be described as “Floatia.” This is a poetic universe composed of floating presences, playful creatures, and continuously shifting forms. Within Floatia, characters drift freely between imagination and memory and often bear hollow, puppet-like gazes that suggest an open and unfixed sense of identity. Rather than representing specific individuals, these figures function as vessels that carry emotions, experiences, and possibilities.
Color and materiality play equally significant roles within this universe. In this visual language, pink is not merely a symbol of sweetness but an atmosphere charged with emotional energy, one that holds warmth, intensity, and subtle resonance. Alongside the paintings, ceramic sculptures extend the world of Floatia into physical space, allowing these characters and fragmented forms to exist as tangible presences.
Within this continually evolving universe, identity remains fluid and imagination is given space to unfold freely. Through this process, artistic creation becomes a way of re-examining the self and emotional experience, inviting viewers to reconnect with their own curiosity, sensitivity, and sense of vitality.
